What I used (from right)

What You’ll Need

• cooking parchment, about 10cm x 15cm
• masking tape, about 10cm long
• ruler
• pen
• utility knife

Instructions

1) Apply a base coat and two coats of 007.

2) Make line-templates using masking tape (for how to make line-templates, please read this post). I’m using 5mm-wide templates for both on my real nails and in the tutorial. When the polish is completely dry (it should be absolutely 100% dry), place the templates on your nails. Make sure there is no space between your nails and masking tapes.

3) Apply two coats of 49 at the bottom and 011 on the top.

4) When the polish is completely dry (again, 100% dry), peel off the masking tapes. You will have uneven surface, but this will be smoothed perfectly when thick top coat is applied.

This is how the tricolour design looks on my real nails.

If you get bored with the nail polishes you own, you can enjoy them again by this mix-and-match technique. I hardly ever use 49 on its own, but after discovering that it goes well with other colours, it became one of my favourite colours. Hope you enjoyed the tutorial!

Nail Art Tutorial: Middle Parted Black x Gray

I’m still having ribbon fever from yesterday’s necklace, so I’ve decided to continue the theme on my nails. I’m using the masking tape technique again for middle parted design, and I’ll be having a tutorial on making a ribbon motif with metal balls in the next tutorial. Have a lovely girlie weekend!

What I used (from right)

• TopShop /Sketch
• miss sporty /80
• Kiss /02

*and you’ll need a bit of masking tape!

Instructions

1) Apply a base coat and two coats of Sketch except on your ring finger. On the ring finger, apply two coats of 80.

2) When the polish is completely dry (it should be absolutely 100% dry), place the masking tape on your nails (except on the ring finger). Make sure there are no gaps between your nails and masking tapes.

3) Apply one coat of 80.

4) When the polish is completely dry (again, 100% dry), peel off the masking tapes.

Apply thick top coat. This will smooth the uneven surface. Add rhinestones and metal balls on your thumb, middle finger and ring ringer, and you are done!

I also added a silver line on my thumb.

I love the ribbon, but maybe I shouldn’t have added so many rhinestones on my middle finger (it’s quite bling-bling…). Oh well, I’ll live. Hope you enjoyed the tutorial!

Heart & Bow Nails for Valentine’s Day

Continuing from yesterday’s Pinterest Challenge, today’s nail art is something I got inspired by my Pinterest Board (if you are interested in my nail art dedicated board, check out my ‘Mani-spiration’ board here).

These are my inspirations; how pretty are they?! I wish I had enough skills to draw the cats on my nails, too!

What you’ll need:

• toothpick
• masking tape
• pen
• X-Acto knife
• parchment paper/baking paper
• rhinestones

To get the look:

*I recommend painting your nails one hand at a time, unless you have kind friend/ sister/ partner/ kid next to you who could peel off the masking tapes for you!

1) Apply two coats of nail polish. For my index and little fingers, I used masking tape to nake straight lines. For the middle finger, draw a half circle (like drawing a reverse French nail). And for the little finger, draw a half circle at the tip after the base polish is dry.

2) While you are waiting for your nails to dry, stick two small pieces of masking tapes on parchment paper; each piece should be big enough to cover your nails on thumb and middle finger.

3) Draw three small bows on the masking tape for thumb, and one bow for the middle finger. Cut out the bows with X-Acto knife.

4) Now, put these masking tapes on your thumb and middle finger, and make sure there is no space between your nails and masking tapes.

5) Apply nail polish in the gaps of cut-out bows, and peel off the masking tape while the polish is half-dry.

6) Add rhinestones on the middle of bows.

7) For the hearts on the ring finger, use a toothpick to make two tiny dots next to each other, then drag the dots down (aim for ‘v’ shape) and connect them. Retouch the shape with toothpick, and one heart is done. Repeat the process to draw lots of hearts.

8) Apply one coat of top coat, and yes, you’re finally done!

My Valentine’s Day nail art with Mr & Mrs Weird’s son (sorry, I couldn’t resist it!).

I’m loving this new way (well, for me, anyway) of stencil-ish painting with masking tapes, because now I don’t have to worry about shaky hands (especially my left hand) :) Hope you enjoyed the tutorial!

Nail Art Tutorial: Itsy-Bitsy Triangles

Are you good at hand drawing? Well, I’m not, and that means that I usually rely heavily on masking tapes when painting patterns on my nails. OK, I love using masking tapes, but… sometimes it drives me CRAZY (you know, all the cutting and the extra drying time?). There has to be another way, I thought.

And… yap, I finally got it. I no longer have to worry about my shaky hands! I love myself. Can I say it again? OK, maybe not. So, let’s get cracking on!

You’ll need:

• nail polish
• tear-off paper pallet
• small, sharp scissors
• orange stick/ tweezers

Instructions:

1) Apply small amount of nail polish on the paper pallet, and let it dry.

2) When the polish is completely dry, slowly peel it off with an orange stick or tweezers.

See? It comes off pretty easily. If it doesn’t peel off, maybe the polish isn’t dry enough yet, or the polish was too thinly applied.

3) With sharp scissors, cut the dry polish into triangle shapes (or whatever shape your heart tells you), and the preparation is done!

Now all you need to do is paint your nails as you normally do, stick the triangles on the wet polish, and finish it off with a top coat.

I can’t believe how easy it is to make these triangles, and also to make these otherwise complicated patterns (sorry the photo is a bit blurred). Possibilities are endless, and I can’t wait to try making more patterns!

Nail Art Tutorial: ZigZag Decal How-To

Happy Monday, lovelies! Today’s tutorial will show you how to create zigzag nail art in an easy way.

I’ve been dying to try zigzag designs like Missoni’s textiles or chevron, but I always failed perfecting the design because… well, my hands were too shaky. So, if you are not too confident about your hand-painting skill like me, this tutorial is perfect for you :)

You’ll need:

• nail polishes (for your base colour + for zigzags)
• tea-off paper pallet
• pinking shears
• tweezers

Instructions:

1) Let’s start by making decals. Apply small amount of nail polish on the paper pallet, and let it dry (for more detailed instructions on how to make decals, please read this post).

2) When the polish is completely dry (I mean, 100% completely dry), cut the dried polish with pinking shears to make a thin stip.

3) Slowly peel the polish off from the paper pallet, and your decal is ready! If the polish doesn’t peel off easily, the polish isn’t dry enough yet.

4) Apply nail polish for the base-colour (I’m using L’Oreal / 101) as you normally do, then place the decals with tweezers.

5) Apply a top coat to finish off.

Easy peasy, right? At first I tried cutting the decals without the paper pallet (the same way as making triangle decals), but the dried polish wasn’t strong enough and shattered to pieces… It was such a relief when I tried with the pallet on and worked :)

I’m trying to come up with other design ideas using these decals, but I think I’ll have to try the mighty Missoni first (just make the zigzag decals thinner). Hope you’re going to enjoy zigzag art!
