The spring palette typically conjures visions of soft pastel pinks and delicious ice cream mints, of fresh light colours, muted lipsticks and delicate blushes. The girls from Marc Jacob’s ‘Daisy’ fragrance ad specifically come to mind with their minimal makeup and tousled hair, because spring is a time of unquestionable simplicity and grace, right?
Wrong! The spring runways have spoken and get ready because 2014 is all about innovation, modernisation and quite simply; being bold! And we mean bold! We’re talking bright orange, striking azure and glittering gold! Intrigued? Well we’re here to guide you through this season’s looks and show you that with the right direction and a little creativity, anyone can make them work!
#1 Orange Lipstick
That’s right, orange! Goodbye subtle pastel pink, hello unmistakeable tropical tangerine! But don’t panic! We know you’re thinking that there is just no way you can pull off orange lipstick, but remember it’s all about the shade! Always match colour to your skin tone and you can’t go wrong. For instance, if you have a darker skin tone then opt for a rich, burnt orange hue while those with paler complexions should choose peach and coral shades!
We recommend: Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in vivid orange for you girls with olive and darker skin tones. For the fairer faces among us, give Estee Lauder’s Pure Colour Lipstick in Wild Coral a go.
TIP: Orange lipstick looks far better matte so avoid putting gloss on top!
#2 Cat Eyes
Cat eyes are by no means original; they’ve been in style for decades and have stayed fashionable year after year. However, they have been somewhat reinvented for 2014 and it seems an edgier cat eye is upon us, a stylish geometric cat eye. To emulate the runway looks, experiment with creating a linear, more structured looking feline flick.
We recommend: Mac Liquidlast Liner. This eyeliner is fantastic for its precision and easy application.
#3 Bold Brows
It’s a fact that the eyebrows frame the face and can make or break your appearance, so in a season of striking colours and dramatic looks, it is unsurprising that our brows are meant to be bold in 2014! Experiment with a stronger, more dramatic shape, think Cara Delevingne and Ashley Olsen, and turn up the thickness a notch this spring.
We recommend: Illamasqua Eye Brow Cake to enhance and thicken your brows andSmashbox Angle Brow Brush #12 to perfect the shape.
#4 Blue Eyeshadow
The spring runways saw makeup artists using all the blues of the spectrum in innovative ways. Albeit, the majority of us won’t be walking around with huge blocks of sky blue colour on our lids on an average week day, but there is certainly inspiration to be taken from the catwalk. Attempt a navy smoky eye for a change or a thin line of electric blue liner on the lower lashes perhaps.
We recommend: Lancome Midnight Rush Eye and Shadow Palette for a brighter interpretation of the smoky eye or if you’re feeling a little more outrageous then experiment with the aqua shades in Nars Duo Cream Eye Shadow in ‘Burn it Blue’ .
#5 Gold Glitter!
Jason Wu’s runway show featured fabulous glittery golden eyelids, a look that oozed drama, luxury and sophistication! So why not try a little gold glitter on top of a brown smoky eye to liven up your look or attempt a thin line of glitter under the eye. Finish off with a flick of eyeliner and lashings of mascara.
We recommend: The award winning Barry M Dazzle Dust Gold Iridescent. A dazzling pearly glitter with a rich pigment and smooth texture, this dust can be used for both subtle and more intense looks.
TIP: Always use a primer on the eyelids before applying shadow and glitter.
So are you feeling inspired? Go on and give some of this year’s up and coming trends a try! Experiment, find out what works for you and give a nod to this season’s styles.
