Ah, dry shampoo. We can’t imagine a time when it wasn’t around to save our limp strands before happy hour. Perhaps one of the only drawbacks to its magnificence is that it can leave behind an ashy residue. Also, it’s not always cheap (especially at the rate we use it). Here, a quick alternative using two ingredients you already have in your kitchen.
What you need: Cornstarch, cocoa powder, a small mixing bowl, a whisk and a fluffy makeup brush.
What you do: Whisk cornstarch and cocoa powder in the bowl--adjusting how much cocoa powder to add depending on how dark your hair is. Lightly dip the makeup brush into the mixture and dust it onto your roots. Focus on the areas where you tend to get the greasiest, like your part and around your hairline. Wait a few minutes (to let the powder settle), and then brush it out (to ensure that it distributes evenly).
Why it works: Cornstarch absorbs oil, and the cocoa tints the powder so it blends with darker hair colors and doesn’t leave a chalky residue. Plus, it smells kinda yummy.
Pro tip: The cornstarch (and most dry shampoos) does still have the tendency to leave your hair looking a bit dull. To add back some luster, apply a glossy serum from the middle of your strands to the ends.
