Methyl, propylene glycol, ethyl paraben, sodium laurel sulfate, triethanolamine, imidazolidinyl and titanium. No, I didn’t just cough a furball. Nor have I been possessed by an evil spirit and have begun muttering random words and sounds.
Nope, rather these are just some of the common ingredients found in our skin care products. I repeat, just some. I was going to write an entire list, but I got bored. Sorry.
So instead you have just a handful of weird-sounding, unreadable ingredients that only people with a science degree under their belts can understand. Or those guys from Big Bang Theory (except Penny).
In comparison, this is the ingredients list for an organic skin care product:
- Certified Organic Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice
- Certified Organic Macadamia (Macadamia Ternifolia) Oil
- Certified Organic Shea Butter (Butyrospermum Parkii)
- Certified Organic Coconut (Cocos Nucifera) Oil
- Cetearyl Glucoside (Vegetarian)
- Certified Organic Cocoa Butter (Theobromo Cacoa)
- Certified Organic Olive (Olea Europaea) Oil
- Glycerin (Vegetarian)
- Grapefruit Seed (Citrus Grandis) Extract
- Certified Organic Essential Oils of Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia), Geranium (Geranium Maculatum) & Rose (Rosa Centifolia).
Okay, sure. There’s a lot in there. But you can actually understand what it is. Cool, right?
That ingredients list is from one of our favorite organic skin care range, Mukti (pronounced mooktee). The product is their Cleansing Lotion, if you’re interested. And if you’re not, well tough luck, because there are more awesome organic skin care products coming up right now.
1. Stark Skincare Green Tea Detox Clay Mask
This product is one of my all-time favorites. Developed by Canadian brand Stark Skincare, the product is a facial mask specifically developed to eliminate congestion and blemishes. It also works to exfoliate the skin and ‘reveal a bright, clear complexion!’
I personally believe the magic is in the combination of green tea (a known antioxidant and acne-fighter) and clay. It’s available at just $30.00 Canadian.
2. Mukti Aloe Vera Moisturiser
At a cool $35.50 AUD, this moisturizing gel is lightweight but extremely hydrating. 13. Truth Art Beauty
And now for something a little different, but a lot of fun. Why not try making your own beauty products? Don’t worry you don’t need that before mentioned science degree, nor do you need a lab where you can mix up products. In fact, all you need is a computer and an Internet connection.
How? Well, Truth Art Beauty in a New York based skincare company that allows you to tailor-make your own eye balm, moisturizer, body salve, body buff and bath tea. Their philosophy is based on the idea that skincare, like food, should be as pure and natural as possible. For this reason, they ensure that their products are of the highest quality and are completely natural.
And all you have to do is choose the ingredients you want included in your product (i.e. you can choose rosehip for its anti-ageing qualities or tamanu to reduce puffiness). Truth Art Beauty then blend the ingredients for you and send over your unique, customized product. And they’re so sure that you’re going to love it that they offer a money back guarantee. Pretty cool, right?
All of their products also come with an expiration date, in line with their underlying philosophy that skincare, like food, should be used fresh. Yep, this company definitely takes up my ‘crush of the week’ slot.
